Incantata
.
Concert Review – transcription of hand-written letter
.
Dear Caroline and Robyn
– by way of an extended Thank You
.
To see and hear ‘Incantata’ is to glimpse heaven on earth.
.
Their music and song is ease for a troubled mind, balm for a wounded heart and the cause of a soaring spirit. To see and hear ‘Incantata’ is to be in the presence of mystic magic.
.
You don’t merely watch or listen to ‘Incantata’ you experience them. I am reminded of the time when Jesus responding to the question, ‘How should we love?’ replies:- ‘With your whole mind, with your whole heart, and with your whole soul’. That is how they performed and for me how they were enjoyed. And looking around at those lucky enough to be there, I knew I wasn’t alone.
.
An ‘Incantata’ experience is rare, but very, very, very good for you.
.
‘Incantata’ keened through the gentle hallowed honey glow of tallow candle light, was so appropriate to the ethereal, soaring contemplative cadences. The singing of Caroline Lynn and Robyn Sutherland in wonder-full harmony, together with subtle sensitive melodic and lyric interpretations, melded with the rippling mellifluous harp, a myriad gentle mysterious tinkling bells and things, to the more certain celtic drum, transport you to a happy and holy place, far from the madding crowd. All who were there gained under their enchanting spell.
.
Singing dexterously in several tongues, Incantata’s inspired repertoire and arrangements, anchored around five Cantigas de Santa Maria (devotions and praises of the Virgin), was beautifully balanced by a mix and match of carols, Sephardic, Pilgrim songs, Irish, English, French and Spanish folk, culminating in the rapturous ecstasy of ‘Imperayritz de la Ciutat Joyosa – Verges ses par’, had the audience, (to mangle Dryden) “entranced with no room for thought”. Thus the programme while providing ample opportunity to deepen and lift the spirit also met our more sensuous and earthly needs in times of travail and celebration.
.
Truly it can be said ‘Incantata’ delivered a concert to nourish both Body and Soul.
.
Their warm, easy, modest manner engaged the audience, providing context and explanation of the music and songs. This made the night also a thoroughly enjoyable educational experience, enhanced by an integrated projection of inspiring images of nature, art, architecture and Icons of Mary. Many took up their invitation to examine the numerous unusual instruments and chat with them at interval and End of Show.
.
People lingered for more than half an hour. The Church was full of enthusiastic chatter. Many among the crowd were musicians, but the delight was universal. How disappointed we were to discover we could not take ‘Incantata’ home with us; on CD! But Ah, what a memory to cherish.
